CHICAGO, IL (May 14, 2012)-This Friday night two Heavyweights will slug it out in Dover, Delaware will slug it out as Franklin “Yah Yah” Lawrence (17-2-2, 12 KO’s) takes on Mike Mollo (20-3-1, 12 KO’s) for the vacant NABA title.

Mollo has been training hard for this bout as the Chicago native knows the importance of the bout.

“Not only am I going to win but I will win in spectacular fashion. I have been putting in the hard work and have been in training camp for ten weeks”, said Mollo from his training camp in Chicago.

Mollo does not put much stock in the five fight knockout streak that Lawrence is on that has catapulted to the number-twelve ranking by the WBC.

“He beat an out shape Jason Gavern and Jason Estrada. He has gotten off easy in those fights and if he wants to live off that then he is fooling himself”

Mollo is most remembered for gallant effort against Andrew Golota as part of the Roy Jones - Felix Trinidad HBO PPV undercard on January 19, 2008 and knows what the win will do for his career.

“This fight will get me back in the spotlight and I am not looking to squeak by with a decision”

Mollo, who hasn’t fought since August 6, 2010 has been training hard to make sure he is primed and ready for Lawrence.

“I spar like it is a real fight and this long layoff doesn’t mean anything because I am always in the gym. I was training for a fight last summer with Seth Mitchell on HBO and the fight got called off due to Robert Guerrero getting hurt and I would like to fight him if it’s the right situation. I am a fighter”

“This fight with Lawrence begins my road to redemption. I am in great shape and I am ready to fight”

The action begins on www.gfl.tv at 7:30 pm with Mike Mittman calling the action with analysts Legendary Heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and Marc Abrams.

The bout can be seen over the world on www.gfl.tv ($9.99) by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Friday_Night_Fights/1487

BUFFALO – The father of light welterweight boxer Nick Casal considers his son lucky to be alive after sustaining several deep cuts to his head in an attack last weekend.

Calling his son “blessed,” Ray Casal told The Associated Press by phone on Monday that Nick is conscious while recovering at a Buffalo hospital. The most recent tests conducted earlier in the day showed no signs of brain damage, and doctors expect him to make a complete recovery, the father said.

“It’s miraculous actually. Even the doctor was shocked,” Casal said. “For him to come out of it with no problems, it’s unheard of.”

The attack occurred Saturday morning in the town of Niagara, said police, without revealing other details because the investigation continues.

Casal said his son lost a large amount of blood, and that it took doctors three hours to close several gashes on the side and back of his head. His son’s tooth was chipped and one arm severely swollen but not broken after he was struck at least 15 times across the head and body with what the father described to be a light metal object.

Despite the severity and depth of the cuts, tests also showed Casal’s skull was not fractured.

The injuries forced the cancellation of a fight between Casal (22-4-1) and Ruslan Provodnikov (21-1-0) for the World Boxing Organization‘s intercontinental title at a Niagara Falls casino next month. Because it was the main event, the entire card has been canceled. Continue Reading…

Heavyweight Maurice Harris (25-16-2, 11 KOs) discusses his recent fight with Edmund Gerber (L UD8) and the years he has spent in the sport of boxing. The Gerber-Harris fight took place in Gerber’s homeland of Germany. Team Harris believes that their fighter deserved the decision.

Maurice tells it his own way:

I like Germany. I went there last fall when I sparred with Edmund Gerber, and then I went there a couple weeks ago when I fought him. Germany is different. It’s a country that has a history. There were hard times in Germany and even though it’s not like that anymore, you can tell that some of the people have been affected by it. They have really nice restaurants in Germany and the people treated me really good. There are a lot of boxing fans over there. It’s not like America. The fans love boxing, and some of them came up to me and asked for an autograph, but they were really there to support their man Edmund Gerber. That’s why they were so quiet during our fight. They weren’t used to seeing their man fall behind like that.

The main thing about fighting in Germany is having to adjust to the different time zone. As soon as I got off the plane, I slept for two hours and then got up and went for a run. The air was good. Everything was good. It was relaxing and peaceful. Some fighters don’t like to go overseas to fight, but I don’t care. When you’re a fighter, you fight. This is our job. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Alaska. True fighters will fight anywhere.

I get nervous before my fights and I always pray before I go out there, because anything can happen in the ring. When you get in the ring, you have to be ready to die. It’s a blood sport and I accept my role as a fighter. This is what God put me here to do. I haven’t had a fortunate career like a lot of other guys, but I’m a student of the game. I study it, inside and out. I have an eye for it. It takes me about thirty seconds to see what type of fighter you are. I know how to adapt and capitalize on your mistakes. Continue Reading…

Brian Viloria (30-3) vs. Omar Nino Romero (31-4-2)

Boxing360 Pick: Viloria is really on a nice roll. He’s had trouble twice before with Omar Nino but that was years ago. The Viloria of today can box, punch, and pick his spots like the veteran he is. Third time is a charm. Viloria by late TKO.

We don’t need performance enhancing drugs ruining our sport. And it’s clear from the week we all need to be educated about what is going on in our gyms and locker rooms.

With that in mind, we saw writer Zach Arnold’s article on boxinginsider.com and would like to share a part of it and the link so you can read it for yourself. It’s everything you want to know about our current testosterone problem in combat sports.

A crash course on testosterone, hypgonadism, and doping

By Zach Arnold/ FightOpinon.com

We have all heard about the Lamont Peterson/Amir Khan fight getting cancelled. When you heard that the cancellation was due to Peterson failing a drug test due to detection of synthetic testosterone, you probably groaned. You may not totally understand what that exactly means, but you know it’s bad news.

For boxing fans, fighters, promoters, and media, they can learn a thing or two from their MMA counterparts about recent drug scandals and the evolution of doping in combat sports.

What you, as a fight fan, must know about modern day doping practices in combat sports is downright ugly. However, it’s necessary to understand what is going on in order to appreciate the gravity of the doping dilemma in combat sports. You’ve been warned.

Amir "King" Khan

Now that Lamont Peterson has been caught using synthetic testosterone and the rematch with Amir Khan is off, the question remains: Who will Amir “King” Khan fight next? Rumors have circulated about a variety of opponents. But none have been solidified. Khan tweeted yesterday that his proposed replacement date of June 30 is tentative. But who would be ready on such short notice?

The next opponent depends on what division Khan wants to compete in. He seemed to indicate he was going to fight Peterson at 140 and then campaign at 147 pounds in order to position for a Floyd Mayweather, Jr showdown.

Jan Zaveck

1) Jan Zaveck: He’s 36 and at barely 5’8″ Khan would still have a height and reach advantage. Plus, the man’s wheels are not the best and he had a solid HBO outing with Andre Berto. It would be an action-packed 147 debut. Brook is an inch shorter than Khan and gives up two inches in reach. Its an evenly matched fight between two guys with bright futures. Maybe a bit too soon but a good nonetheless.

Kell Brook

2) Kell Brook: Ok. Maybe you build to this one. But all-British to decide who moves to the upper levels of 147? The gate alone would be worth it in the UK.

3) Paulie Malignaggi: If Khan wants an easy entry into the 147 ranks with a belt to boot, I think this is the way to go. Paulie may want to milk the belt a little first so maybe not. But same promoter and they have a history.

Danny Garcia

4) Danny Garcia: The kid just got his belt and Khan is leaving 140 anyways. It makes no sense for the fight to happen. Nevertheless, this one was mentioned as a rumor.

5) I’ll leave this up to you the fight fan. Who should Amir Khan fight next?

This past weekend in Germany, heavyweight contender Maurice Harris (25-16-2, 11 KOs) who hails from East Orange, NJ, dropped a disputed decision to undefeated local favorite and hometown hero, Edmund Gerber (19-0, 13 KOs). Everyone who watched felt Harris was robbed. The scorecards read 78-74 and 79-73 twice, all in favor or Gerber.

“There’s no doubt about it I was robbed this weekend,” the hard-luck Harris said. “Gerber landed maybe five punches the entire fight. I was too slick for him and he couldn’t touch me. I landed more punches and everyone who saw the fight knew I should have won. Like everyone says, if you fight overseas, you better get the knockout, because the judges are going to favor the hometown guy. I would love to fight Gerber here in America, but I don’t think it will happen because he knows deep down inside his mind that he lost to me already. I’ll be back soon.”

Said promoter Mario Yagobi, “Edmund Gerber was outclassed this weekend by Harris. There’s no way Gerber should have gotten the decision, as he literally only landed a hand full of punches on Maurice throughout the whole fight. I will be talking to the IBF in regards to Maurice’s ranking. He should still remain in the top 10.”

HBO PPV

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0) vs. Miguel Cotto (37-2)

Boxing 360 Pick: Floyd all the way. Too fast, too smart, too sharp and just overall the better fighter. Weight won’t matter. Floyd will be stronger. The Pound for Pound King by late stoppage.

Saul Alvarez (39-0-1) vs. Shane Mosley (46-7-1)

Boxing360 Picks: Canelo is going to stop Mosley. No ifs ands or buts. He beats down and stops the legend.

Jessie Vargas (18-0) vs. Steve Forbes (35-10)

Boxing360′s Pick: This one has Vargas all over it. Old school vs. new school. Big vs. small. However you want to play it, Vargas has all the advantages. Vargas by decision.

Carlos Quintana (28-3) vs. Deandre Latimore (23-3)

Boxing360′s pick: Quintana is game and winning at 154. Ltimore is an up and down fighter. This is a toss up. I say Quintana in a minor upset.

Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, CT

ESPN2

Demetrius Andrade (16-0) vs. Rudy Cisneros (12-3)

Boxing 360 Picks: This is a showcase bout. Cisneros has never won a significant fight and Andrade is big for the weight. Andrade by KO.

Daniel Ponce De Leon (42-4, 35 KOs) vs. Eduardo Lazcano (24-2, 11KOs)

Boxing360′s pick: Is it really a pick? De Leon by Destruction in the fifth round. This is just a nice stay busy fight for Ponce between big time fights. A man has to work.

Boxing360′s Pick:

Ishe Smith (22-5, 10 KOs) vs. Ayi Bruce (21-6, 13 KOs)

Boxing360′s pick: Bruce is a late replacement for Smith. Ishe should be a top contender heading into the sunset. Instead he is the come backing gunslinger looking to make it all happen in one glorious stretch run. I hope he does. Smith by 7th round knockout in a surprisingly passionate performance.

Palais des Sport Marcel Cerdan, Paris, France

Hassan N’Jikam (26-0, 17 KO’s) vs. Max Bursak (24-0-1, 10 KOs)

Boxing360′s pick. Ok. I have to admit I have never seen these guys. I did the youtube search, I looked at the boxrec. It would appear that N’Jikam has the better wins with a twelve round decision over Giovanni Lorenzo. Add in the higher KO ratio and we’ll take N’Jikam by decision.

This Saturday, heavyweight Maurice Harris (25-15-2, 11 KOs) takes on Edmund Gerber (19-0, 13 KOs) in Germany. Harris turned pro in 1992 at the age of 16 and has been in the ring with just about every top heavyweight of his time, either in an actual fight or in sparring. Despite a modest record, Harris has a reputation as a very skillful heavyweight and he holds upset victories over David Izon and Sergei Liakovich. Harris’s last fight was a twelfth round TKO victory over Derric Rossy. Now promoted by Boxing 360, Harris continues to pursue his dream of becoming heavyweight champion. In this interview, Harris discusses his recent fights with Tony Thompson and Derric Rossy, his upcoming fight with Edmund Gerber, plus the Klitschko brothers and his own 2001 fight with Chris Byrd.

DL: Before I ever saw you fight, I heard about you. What I was told is that you are one of the most skilled heavyweights of recent times. What is your assessment of your career thus far and what do you want to accomplish while you’re still in this game?

MH: I started young (as a pro). I didn’t go up through the amateur ranks, I started young. I learned on the job. I watched Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson and Roy Jones and I picked up a lot of my skills by watching them. Nothing has changed for me. My goal is still the same and that’s to become the heavyweight champion of the world. Whatever God has planned for me, that’s what it will be. But I’ve never stopped trying.
