They say power is the last thing to go but watching Alejandro Berrio fight is to witness that heart, courage and determination never leave either. A classic Colombian power puncher, Berrio got his start early in Cartagena and never looked back. He turned pro in 1997 and set off a string of explosive early knockout wins before being upset in a slugfest with Jairo Siris. But Berrio did not give up there and put together another impressive strong of knockout wins through to 2003 when he made his US debut against Eric Mitchell in Philadelphia. In a shocking upset, Berrio was stopped in the first round TKO.
For most fighters, that would be the end of things; America being the proving ground for many international fighters. But Berrio only had his steel resolve hardened and he went on to take out name fighters like Syd Vanderpool via a knockout in nine action filled rounds.
Next up would be a world title shot against Robert Steiglitz. It was here that a rivalry was born. Their first fight was a slugfest for the chance to fight for the IBF super middleweight title. Steiglitz would pull out the victory late via an 11th round TKO.
But the rivalry was just beginning.
Berrio rebounded with two wins, one of which was an upset of then undefeated Yusaf Mack in a six round TKO that set up a shot at Steiglitz and his newly minted IBF super middleweight title.
This time Berrio would not be denied and stopped Steiglitz in just three rounds to claim his first world title.
In late 2007, Berrio lost his title to Lucien Bute in a hard fought battle.
Since that loss, Berrio has been on a winning streak of four fights and comes to the Boxing 360 team a refreshed fighter looking to make a big impact in the sport yet again.
