All it takes is one look at this clip of Boxing 360's first female addition to our team to understand how Amanda "The Real Deal" Serrano got her nickname.
Born in Puerto Rico but raised in Brooklyn, NY, Amanda Serrano grew up with an older sister, Cindy Serrano, who boxed professionally. Amanda, 22, fell in love with boxing by watching her sister fight. But when it came time for her to fight, both Cindy and her trainer Jordan Maldonado quickly discouraged young Amanda. As veterans of the fight game, both understood how hard this sport can be and didn't want Amanda to go through the hardships Cindy did. After a trip to the gym where Serrano was matched with a boy in order to discourage her, Serrano still kept coming back for more training. After passing a final test in taking on her sister in a gym war and more than holding her own, Serrano's path was clear; she would become a fighter.
After a short but successful amateur career that saw her win the Staten Island amateur championship, New York City Golden Gloves amateur championship and Empire State amateur championship, Serrano turned pro in March of 2009 with a majority decision over Jackie Trivilino. Four bouts and three wins later, Serrano would get her stiffest test against Ela Nunez, a road warrior type who is much better than her record indicates. Serrano would be pushed to the limit after taking the fight on short notice of a week. The bout ended in a draw and Serrano vowed to get revenge.
Three wins later, she would when she took on Nunez in a rematch at the Turning Stone Casino on January 29, 2011. This time, with preparation of a full camp behind her, Serrano went to work early, beat Nunez to the punch without receiving too much in return and pulled out a unanimous decision after six exciting rounds.
2011 has been a career year for Amanda. She exploded out of the gates in January, fighting Ela Nunez twice. The first fight in January was a decision win. In a rematch in April, Amanda improved on performance and stopped her in four rounds. June and August brought first and second round technical knockouts. That step the razor sharp Serrano on course to fight for her first world title, the vacant IBF super featherweight belt against Kimberly Connor who came into the bout 9-1-2 off of a 5-0-1 stretch. Amanda stopped her in two round of fury to make history. With the win she not only won her first world title but became our first world champion as well as the first woman ever to hold the IBF Female Super Featherweight title. Not one to rest on history, Amanda came back in November with another stellar performance. This time she traveled all the way to Dominican Republic where she finished out her year stopping Grecia Nova.
Amanda Serrano is certainly becoming everything we knew and hoped she would.
Amanda Serrano is an all action fighter with a high ceiling and room to grow. We look forward to her fighter's journey and celebrate her as a shining star in the Boxing 360 family.
